Whose house
Something I regret is thinking I must guard my house against what I perceive as threat.
Worse, to sentence them to capital punishment for what I consider their violating my sanctum. It’s as if I faced the same thing for eating the bacon I love.
The reality is that our species decided a long time ago, or maybe discovered, that eating the flesh of fellow creatures is not only tasty, but an efficient way to get the protein nourishment our bodies crave.
What’s a field mouse to do?
We’re in our once every-four-years national contest to determine who and what policies will shape our life. But it seems our decision to take the lives of fellow animals to sustain us, has melded into our discussion of how to manage our lives together.
If you were to visit from another planet, and watch our political campaign, you might wonder: “Am I missing something, or are these not members of the same species, threatening to annihilate each other, rather than devise strategies for living together? Has no one pointed out to them that their well-being is irrevocably tied to each of their well-being? Species suicide?”
So, how do we mitigate this deep pathology?
Maybe begin with the simplest gesture toward caring for our neighbors.
And pray that might bleed into our caring for each other.

Succinct piece BC. Hits home. Thank you as always for casting light on this huge subject.
